Graduate School

Introduction

China University of Petroleum-Beijing (referred to as CUPB) is a key research-orientated university in China, with its strengths on energy studies. With the approval of the State Council, CUPB officially established its graduate school in 2004, and founded advantage discipline innovation platform in 2006. The Graduate School of CUPB has become an important training base for cultivating talents in oil industry, scientific research and social services.

At present, CUPB has 11 First-level and 45 Second-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 11 postdoctoral research stations and 33 First-level disciplines authorized to confer Master’s degrees. And it has 1 national key first-level discipline, 5 national key second-level disciplines, 2 national prospective key disciplines as well as 7 key disciplines of Beijing.

CUPB is authorized by the State Council to confer Doctorate or Master’s degree in 8 disciplines, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering and management. Some disciplines such as petroleum engineering, geological resources and geological engineering, safety technology and engineering, geology and chemical engineering take the lead nationwide. New energy, subsea, clean energy and environmental protection technology are undergoing rapid development. Aparts from the academic degrees, CUPB awards a variety of professional degrees, including Master of Engineering (with 20 professional areas), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Professional Accounting (MPAcc), Master of Translation, Master of Finance and Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL).

CUPB has a strong faculty force, with 224 professors and 248 associate professors. Among them, there are 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Science, 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering and 7 Cheung Kong Scholars.

Up to November 2014, there are over 1093 doctoral degree candidates, 5475 master’s degree candidates and 144 overseas students pursuing doctoral and master degrees in CUPB, among which 2287 candidates for professional degrees. The enrollment plan each year is around 2300. The overseas students originally come from Kazakhstan, Sudan, Russia and other 43 countries.

In recent years, CUPB has focused on creating a strong academic atmosphere by setting outstanding PhD publication awards, stimulating graduate students’ ability for innovative scientific research, promoting graduates to become the fresh troops of the university’s scientific research work. So far, CUPB has produced all the Outstanding Doctoral Theses in China in oil and gas area. One paper has been published on Science with a PhD candidate being the first author.

CUPB has formed an engineering-oriented multilevel system in education and research, nurturing high-level professional talents of versatility and capability. Graduate students are cultivated for both academic research and practical application with overall quality. So far, CUPB has collaborated with 22 enterprise research centers for doctoral joint cultivation, as well as 118 enterprise research centers for graduate joint cultivation. With the foundation of Beijing Engineer College and Karamay Engineer College, CUPB’s professional education, especially in engineering area, has had great impact nationwide. In 2014, the Beijing Engineer College, co-founded with China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), has been awarded the title of National Model Joint Training Base for Graduate Students of Engineering Professional Degree.

With the oil industry in China implementing Going Global strategy, demand for international innovative talents is increasing sharply. CUPB actively promotes internationalization of graduate student education to upgrade itself into a leading university in petroleum and petro-chemical studies and to provide better service to the world energy industry. CUPB has established cooperation with many top international universities as well as corporations including CNPC, Sinopec, Total, ADNOC which have sponsored postgraduate students to take active part in international and domestic activities. With ten years’ exploration and practice, the school eventually builds a state-province-university three-level postgraduate education system, and successively launched some international education projects, including programs supported by China Scholarship Council and Beijing Municipal Education Commission, Double Degree Programs, English-taught Master Programs, etc. As one of the 18 members of Sino-EU Engineering education Platform (SEEEP), CUPB cooperates with Technical University of Catalonia and jointly applied the program on new and clean Energy areas, being of great significance on Sino-EU engineering education development.

In recent years, CUPB strives to establish world-class research university, continuously adjusting and perfecting the system for high-level specialists, endeavoring to create a strong academic atmosphere. Looking forward the future, graduate education will continue to focus on the principles of human-oriented reform and innovation, optimizing structure, giving prominence to special features, enhancing quality and achieving the excellence.
