Prospecting Technology and Engineering (Well Logging)

About Program:

By putting precisely designed instruments into wells deeper than thousands meters underground, Well logging could collect acoustic, electromagnetic and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) data of structural characteristics, which makes it an important part in petroleum exploration and prospecting. With data processed and interpreted by well logging technicians, oil and gas reservoir would be better understood through the full life circle of petroleum field development.

The undergraduate education of well logging at China University of Petroleum (Beijing) could be traced back to the year of 1953. In early years, the program of well logging and exploration geophysics were usually combined together named “Prospecting Technology and Engineering”. In 2010, it was awarded as Ministry of Education level University characteristic professionalism unit. As the development of the university and the College of Geophysics and Information Engineering, the independent program of Well Logging is officially set in 2014, with the goal of better cultivating scientific research personnel and professional oil and gas technicians of well logging project design, construction, and management.

Objective:

Students who complete this undergraduate program will:

  1. Acquire the basic professional knowledge in exploration geophysics and well logging technology and know some about the trends and status of chemical engineering development.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to carry out research, engineering design and field work of exploration prospecting, and
  3. Use basic computer knowledge and professional software for solving simple prospecting problems, and understand the general process of programming and software design.
  4. Require the capacity of mastering a foreign language, creativity and cooperation.
