Energy System Analysis (ESA)

Mission and ambition
The mission of the energy system analysis (ESA) research group in the Academy of Chinese Energy Strategy is to create, develop, apply and disseminate the advanced theory and methodologies in the fields such as energy and climate change, energy strategy planning and low-carbon roadmap. We are pleased to work together with other groups to strength and explore our comprehensive research on the key issues in the energy-environment-economy system by means of model development, comprehensive analysis and objective assessment, and provide technical supports and valuable solutions to the achievement of the sustainable energy system and low-carbon development in China and the world.

China is now facing rapid industrialization and urbanization, while there is still a large gap of the per capita GDP compared to in developed countries. Thus, economy development continues to be our main focusing issue. However, China has already become the largest energy consumer and top GHG emitter in the world. In the future, China is confronted with the restrictions from energy, resources and environment, along with the challenges associated with GHG reductions. In the low-carbon framework, China will take great efforts in the development pattern transformation, the industry structure adjustment, the advanced technology innovation, the energy efficiency improvement and the energy and carbon intensity reduction. These efforts are both the main choices to address the global climate change and the ultimate solutions to realize the clean and sustainable development for China. Besides for a set of substantive measures, Chinese government has announced that the emissions in China will peak around 2030 and non-fossil fuels will account for about 20% of the total primary energy consumption at that time, which could be treated as its ambitious targets. Thus, in the next decades, research on energy system analysis will be strong support not only for the government for its policy adjustment, but also for the industry to define its technological mitigation trajectory.
