Discipline name: Chemical Engineering and Technology

1. Overview of the discipline

Chemical Engineering and Technology is the first class discipline in engineering category, which places emphasis on the research of common laws of chemistry, physics and biochemical process and the engineering application technology in chemical industry and other industrial process. It is guided by chemical engineering discipline, and the basic theory is combined with engineering applications. It also involves product development, process development, process design, system simulation, equipment intensification, operating management, environment protection, production management, etc., which is an important engineering field to the national economic construction and society development, and interpenetrated with information, biology, materials, computer, resource, energy, ocean, spaceflight and some other advanced technology fields to promote the development of advanced technology.

The PhD discipline was established in 1983, and after 20 yearsdevelopment, the former second class discipline-Chemical Technology has developed to the national key discipline, and Industrial Catalysis has become the national key cultivating discipline. This first class discipline is the Beijing key discipline. The discipline has one national key laboratory, two key laboratories of Ministry of Education, one Ministerial key laboratory and one trans-department of combined Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering research institution. Thedepartment is equipped with outstanding faculties, which includes 41 professors (4 NationalCrackerjack Young Person, 1 Cheung Kong Scholars, 2 973 chief scientists), and 32 associate professors. The scientific atmosphere of this discipline is very active and aims at the national energy, especially for the significant demand of petroleum and petrochemical field. The discipline has made major contribution to the scientific and technological progress of our country, obtained 1 National Natural Science Award, 3 second prize ofNationalScientific and TechnologicalProgressAwards, 3 Provincial and Ministerial-levelNatural Science Awards and over 50 Provincial and Ministerial-level Advancement Awards. The discipline has educated over 430 PhD students.

2. Education Objectives

The education objective of the master program is to cultivate the students to be patriotic, law-abiding, enterprising and dedicated, healthy, equipped with good cultural awareness and comprehensive quality, and be willing to serve the construction of socialist modernization. Students are required to have solid and wide theoretical basis, master systematic and deep theories and knowledge, have broad perspective, widely known the latest news in the related area all over the world, correctly utilize theoretical knowledge and scientifically use the latest research achievement to solve the chemical process concerned theory and practical engineering problems. It also requests the students to be equipped with innovation ability, pioneering spirit, and to have the comprehensive ability to do teaching and scientific research, and to have the potential of continuing study, innovation and improvement.

The education also aims to develop the strong foreign language ability of the students, which includes skillfully reading the literatures in one main language, good listening and speaking ability, and meeting the basic requirement of proceeding International academic communication.

4. Academic years

The academic year of common PhD student generally consists of 3 years, and no more than 6 years. For graduate student transfers to PhD student after 1 or 2 years’ study, the academic year are 5 years, and no more than 7 years. For graduate student transfers to PhD student after 3 years’ study, the academic years are 6 years and no more than 8 years.

6. Thesis

PhD student shall define his/her research area, collect information, deeply study and determine the research project with the instruction of the supervisor after enrolling in the university. In the process of literature research, PhD student shall pay attention to the latest research achievements in recent five years to guarantee the prospectiveness of the project. PhD student is required to complete the literature review and thesis proposal before the fourth semester. Thesis proposal shall include the source of the project, selected topic basis, domestic and foreign research dynamic and leading edge study, or project background, overall scheme of research planned to adopt, research approach, technical route and specific methods, etc. PhD student is required to read at least 80 literatures, including over 30 foreign literatures. I request the PhD student to estimate the expected thesis objectives, research workload, anticipated difficulties and the solutions. The literature summary and the thesis proposal shall be read out on the faculty (department) academic conference, and then the faculty (department) fill in the evaluation form after widely listening to various opinions, finally, the literature summary and the thesis proposal will be submitted to the degree and discipline construction office after signed by the supervisor and examined by the faculty (department). After the confirmation of the thesis topic, the PhD student shall draft a research plan of the thesis, which includes the main content of each research step (literature review, progress research report, etc.), demand, research method and due date, etc., and shall also arrange the source of the scientific research funds, purchase of the experiment equipments and the processing plan.

Creating a strong academic atmosphere is one of the most important means to improve the innovation ability of PhD students. Each PhD student must attend at least 10 academic activities and academic reports (including the Modern Science and Technology course), and students are encouraged to participate in national and international conferences. The academic activity is evaluated by the supervisor. After passing the evaluation, the assessment materials shall be submitted to department graduate secretary, and the grades shall be recorded. The academic activity must be completed before the oral defense against the thesis.
 

7. Mid-term examination and distribution

For the progress of the PhD thesis, the department shall organize concerned staff into an expert group to examine the thesis of the student. The preliminary examination time is about 8 months after the thesis proposal. For students who have difficulties in the thesis work or who cannot meet the demand of the schedule, they should be transfered to the Master Program or terminated from education, and advice from the supervisor and the students shall be asked for.

8. Demand of practice

1) Students should be the teaching assistant for at least 1 course, which is evaluated by the teacher. After passing the evaluation, the assessment materials must be submitted to the department graduate assistant and the scores will be recorded.

2) Assist the supervisor in guiding the undergraduate students’ graduation project or thesis, which is evaluated by the supervisor. After passing the evaluation, the assessment materials must be submitted to the department graduate assistant and the scores will be recorded.

Each PhD student must attend at least 2 academic activities and academic reports, and students are encouraged to participate in national and international conferences. The academic activity must be completed before the oral defense against the thesis.

2)Education termination

The education termination of PhD student is carried out according to Basic regulation regarding to PhD education of China University of petroleum(Beijing).

3)      Basic requirement of published papers of PhD students.

This is carried out according to the Basic Requirement of Published Papers of PhD Studentsissued by the academic degree subcommittee of Chemical Engineering Department academic degree subcommittee on 12/19/2011.
