Research Center of Basin and Reservoir

Prof. Pang Xiongqi was born in August 1961 in the Chongyang City of Hubei Province. He is a professor and doctoral supervisor in the China University of Petroleum (Beijing), major in petroleum geology and exploration. B.Sc (1982) from Jianghan Petroleum Institute, M.Sc (1985) from Daqing Petroleum Institute, Ph.D. (1991) from China University of Geosciences. Lecturer, associate professor, and professor (1985~1996) in the Daqing Petroleum Institute. Professor (since 1997) in the China University of Petroleum (Beijing) and has been the director of the Basin Research Center, director of the Oil and Gas Accumulation Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, and the vice president of the university. Vice-Chairman of the Academic Committee of China University of Petroleum (Beijing). Director of the China Petroleum Society and vice-Chairman of the Petroleum Geology Professional Committee. Director of China Geological Society and vice-Chairman of the Unconventional Petroleum Professional Committee. Convener of the Expert Reviewer Group for Oil and Gas Exploration and Development Theme of National Research Program in China (863).

Prof. Pang has been engaged in the research of formation and distribution of oil and gas reservoirs for a long time. Chief Scientist and finished two National Basic Research Program of China (973), Project Leader and finished other 65 research projects. The main contribution is establishing the theoretical model of “Threshold Controlling Oil and Gas Accumulation”, and achieving remarkable results by applying the model in 26 basins and regions worldwide. Academic contributions include as follows. Established a model of migration and accumulation thresholds controlling hydrocarbon accumulation and developed new technologies for quantitative assessment of hydrocarbon resources. Built a model of distribution thresholds controlling hydrocarbon accumulation and developed new technologies for quantitative prediction of favorable hydrocarbon accumulation areas. Built a model of enrichment thresholds controlling hydrocarbon accumulation and developed new technologies for quantitative prediction and evaluation of hydrocarbon bearing property in drilling targets. Found that the common presence of three dynamic boundaries, i.e. the Lower Boundary of Buoyancy-dominated Accumulation, the Hydrocarbon Reservoir Depth Limit, and the Active Source-rock Depth Limit. Illustrated the controlling effects of the Free, Confined, and Bound Hydrocarbon Dynamic Fields on the formation and distribution of conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs.

Prof. Pang Published over 160 research papers (first-authored and corresponding- authored) at high level journals worldwide, including “Fuel”, “AAPG Bulletin”, “Marine Petroleum Geology”, and “Organic Geochemistry”. Published (First-authored) 11 books. Receipt of 11 national software copyrights and 16 national invention patents. Receipt of 1 first prize and 1 second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and 10 first prizes of Provincial and Ministerial Science and Technology Progress Award. First batch of receipt of National Ten Million Talents Projects Award, receipt of Li Siguang Prize in Geological Sciences (2017). Receipt of the Daqing Labor Model, Sun Yuesaki Youth Science and Technology Award, National Excellent Teacher Award and other honors. Receipt of Special Government Allowance.
