On July 5, the WEUN 2019 Summer International Geology Field School ended with a ceremony held by the Department of Geology, Faculty of Petroleum in Karamay Campus of China University of Petroleum-Beijing. Prof. Sun Xudong, Secretary General of WEUN’s Secretariat and Vice Principal of Karamay Campus, Prof. Xie Qingbin, Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Ge Hongkui, Director of Karamay Campus’ Education and Academic Board, several other geology professors, and all the participants of the field school attended the ceremony. Neng Yuan, the chief instructor for the fieldwork, chaired the ceremony.
The ceremony started with the report given by Neng Yuan, introducing the general arrangements and achievements about the 10-day field school. The participants who came from three WEUN member universities made presentations on their experiences and feelings for the field school. Amazed by the natural landforms with geological traits in Junggar Basin and the well-organized Petroleum and Petrochemical industries in Karamay region, the participants all spoke highly of the field school as it made what they learned in books vivid. They also expressed their gratitude to all the teachers and volunteers for their excellent teaching and guidance and assistance provided through the whole summer school. After the presentation, the professors and the participants exchanged ideas through Q&As.
Prof. Sun Xudong congratulated the participants for their fulfillment of the field school and hoped that there would be more teachers and students from WEUN member universities taking part in the programs held by WEUN in the future. This summer school will continue in 2020.
At the end of ceremony, the participants were awarded with Completion Certificates by Prof. Sun Xudong and Prof. Xie Qingbin.
Students’ Comments on the School:
Bruno Lemaire (UniLaSalle, France): The fieldtrip is really interesting and the landscapes are amazing! I realize how lucky I am to enjoy such an opportunity!
Ngui Jia Qi (Universiti Teknologi PETRONA, Malaysia): I’ve experienced hands-on geological exploration of the Junggar Basin, gained valuable knowledge and observed unique and amazing geological phenomena in the field. I valued the chance to be engaged with professionals from the university, local and international students as well as the experts from the petroleum industry in China through different activities and visit.
Dang Duy (Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, Vietnam): I’m so glad that I could have this great opportunity to observe so many geological phenomena: unconformity, sedimentary bedding and faults, strata contact relationship, weathering, oil seedlings, multi-stage river, igneous rocks, metamorphic rocks, fracture zones, modern fluvial deposit, etc.
Ooi Wei Chian (Universiti Teknologi PETRONA, Malaysia): Many thanks to WEUN and China University of Petroleum-Beijing at Karamay for enabling me to carry out the skill of strike and dip measurement, to explore the oil industry, as well as to study the structural geology and sedimentary.
Damien de Miceli (UniLaSalle, France): What I’ve seen during this field school has totally renewed my knowledge learned from books: channel cutting erosion and cross-bedding in Badaowan formation, angular unconformity, boundary between Carboniferous rocks and Triassic formation, wind erosion geomorphology of sandstone surface of Xishanyao formation…
