Photovoltaic conversion is the most promising technology for solar energy applications. Supply of low cost solar grade silicon is one of the key factors for wide spread installation of solar panels to convert solar energy to electricity. Until now, there is not a commercially feasible technology specifically developed to produce solar grade silicon. The objective of the PhD research topics is to develop an innovative technology of solar silicon production.

Appropriate PhD candidates will have a Bachelors or Masters degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Engineering, with outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate academic records. It is compulsory to have an overall IELTS score of 6.0 with each section no less than 5.5 which needs to be satisfied before a full offer of admission is issued (official requirements are 6.5 and 6.0 for each section).

Note to CSC scholarship applicants: if you intend to apply for a China Scholarships Council scholarship to study at UNSW for a PhD degree, you will need to submit a Tuition Fee Scholarship application by 24 January 2011.
