Prospecting Technology and Engineering (Exploration Geophysics)

The goal of exploration geophysics is to help people better understand the earth. For petroleum area, it is used to explore, discover and prove underground resources, which play an essential part in whole industry.
The undergraduate program of Exploration Geophysics started in 1959, which was renamed as “Prospecting Technology and Engineering” together with the program of Well Logging in 2005. In 2010, this program was awarded as Ministry of Education level University characteristic professionalism unit. To provide better and more systematic education in this filed, in 2014, Prospecting Technology and Engineering (Exploration Geophysics) has been set as an independent program. By focusing on education of fundamental knowledge system, creative thinking, practical ability and international perspective, our goal is to cultivate professional technicians and scientists for oil and gas prospecting, projects design and management.
Objective:
Students who complete this undergraduate program will:
- Acquire the basic professional knowledge in exploration geophysics and geology, and learn skills of seismic data collection, processing, and interpretation.
- Demonstrate the ability to carry out research, engineering design and field work of exploration prospecting.
- Use basic computer knowledge and professional software for solving simple prospecting problems, and understand the general process of programming and software design.
- Require the capacity of mastering a foreign language, creativity and cooperation.
Core Courses Samples:
Geophysics, Geology, Information Science, Seismic Data Processing
Required Courses Samples:
General Geology, Basic Electronic Technology, Theory of Electromagnetic Fields, elastic wave dynamics, Basics of nuclear physics, Methods of geophysical well logging, well logging Interpretation and Data Processing, Principles of Seismic Exploration, Geophysical Instruments
Graduation & Degree Requirements:
Students have to gain at least 177 credits to graduate, among which 112 credits from compulsory courses, 39 credits from selective courses and 26 credits from practice teaching. Students have to pass CET-4 to gain the Bachelor degree.
Degree Conferred: B. Eng
Career Prospects:
Most of graduates find jobs in domestic and overseas petroleum companies such as Shell, Chevron, CNPC, Sinopec, and CNOOC, while some join service companies like Schlumberger and BGP. They could also work as researchers, designers and technical managers in research institutions and oil field. And some graduates enroll in high-level Master or Ph.D programs of in China or abroad.
