Research 
Dr. Liu mainly focuses on hydrodynamics and scale-up of gas-solid

fluidized bed reactors. In 1999, he proposed a gas-solid airlift loop
reactor (GSALR), working on hydrodynamics, mass and heat transfer as well as scale-up of the reactor. In 2007 and 2010, GSALR was respectively commercialized as a catalyst stripper in the 80×104 t/a RFCC Units of SINOPEC Yangzi Branch and SINOPEC Yanshan Branch, which brought him a Science and Technology Process Award of SINOPEC in 2011. Recently Dr. Liu has been working on a new approach to significantly increase catalyst to oil ratio by precooling regenerated catalyst.
Gas-solid quick separator is a good alternative of cyclone. Dr. Liu has been focusing on optimization and scale-up of a horizontally positioned separator. Compared with cyclone, the separator offers high separation efficiency (greater than 98%), smaller size (about half of size of cyclone), lower pressure drop(less than 3 kPa) and shorter residence time of gas and particles (less than 0.5 s). The separator was utilized in a pilot apparatus of Wanhua Chemical Group Co. Ltd., and has continually run for 1000 h.
